RICHMOND, Ind. - Message delivered.
The Indiana University East volleyball team opened its season with a pair of victories in the RadioTroy.com Invitational at the Richmond High School Tiernan Center on Aug. 17.
The 25th-ranked Red Wolves opened the day with a 25-6, 25-10, 25-14 win against Huntington University.
IU East then beat St. Catharine College 25-13, 25-16, 25-15.
Red Wolves senior setter Lauren Crump (Indianapolis, Ind./Scecina Memorial High School) had 75 assists on the day to pass the 5,000 assist mark for her career. Crump now has 5,004 career assists.
"I'm proud of her. That's an amazing accomplishment," said Red Wolves coach Charlie Brown. "I know she'll be humble, but it speaks volumes to her dedication as a setter and as a leader on this team.
"And she'll tell you the same thing I'll tell you, that it's a team effort. When you've got good ball control and good hitters it makes your job easier, but it's a great honor for a worthy recipient."
Juniors Sarah Shilling (Warsaw, Ind./Warsaw Community High School) and Caitlin Burroughs (Richmond, Ind./Northeastern High School) led the Red Wolves with 20 kills apiece on the day. Shilling put away a kill on IU East's Parallax Systems Match Point against St. Catharine.
"We wanted to send a message that we are stronger, better, and that this is going to be our season," Burroughs said.
The Red Wolves had "MSG" with a check mark written on their wrists, a reminder to deliver a message on the season's opening day.
Senior Kristin Waechter (Muncie, Ind./Daleville High School) had a team-high 31 digs and nine aces on the day.
The Red Wolves conclude the tournament Aug. 18 with matches against IU Southeast (1-1) at 10 a.m. and Bethel (2-0) at 2 p.m.
