Women's Golf - Fri, Mar. 1, 2013

OLD HICKORY, Tenn. - Jordan Sparks matched the second-best score of the day as the Indiana University East women's golf team opened its spring season at NCAA Division I opponent Tennessee State University on March 1.

Tennessee State won the meet 191-221. The scheduled 18-hole meet was shorted to nine holes due to inclement weather at the Hermitage Golf Course.

Sparks (Liberty, Ind./IUPUI), a redshirt junior, shot 47 on the par 36, 3,083-yard course. It was Sparks' first intercollegiate competition in almost two years.

Tennessee State's Kelly Merkel was medalist with a 43.

"Just one of those days," IU East coach Von Ebeling said of the decision to shorten the competition to nine holes. "It was definitely cold, and then it started raining a little harder and sleeting a bit."

IU East's next competition is April 2 at the Ohio Northern University Tri-Match in Harrod, Ohio.
