Sometimes it was hot. Sometimes it was cold. Sometimes they were at full strength. Sometimes they had just one golfer available.

The Indiana University East women's golf team experienced a little bit of everything during the program's first fall of intercollegiate play.

The new Red Wolves program played a short fall schedule in preparation for the team's first regular season in the spring of 2010

IU East had enough golfers for a full team at one of its three fall events. The Red Wolves finished eighth of nine teams at the Manchester College Fall Invitational on Sept. 19. IU East was just two strokes out of seventh place.

"We got a look at a lot of different situations," IU East coach Von Ebeling said. "It was encouraging to be able to outscore one school and almost outscore two schools."

The Red Wolves were shorthanded at their other fall meets because of injuries and various other circumstances.

"It was disappointing when one of our players went down with an injury and we were unable to participate as a team at another invitational with more schools to see if we could have worked our way up a few more notches," Ebeling said.

"We're still in a numbers game. We're a growing program looking for recruits. If we have extra people when injuries come up, we'll have someone to fill the lineup."

Freshman Courtney Barlage (Versailles, Ohio/Versailles High School) led IU East this fall with an 18-hole average of 90.4. Barlage finished 16th and was the top unaffiliated golfer at the University of Northwestern Ohio Racer Invitational in August.

Freshman Allyson Kenworthy (Hagerstown, Ind./Hagerstown High School) finished the fall with a 103.7 average. Freshman Kelli Moore (Arcanum, Ohio/Franklin Monroe High School) had a 120.7 average. Sophomore Whitney Fisher (Hagerstown, Ind./Hagerstown High School) shot 129 in her only 18-hole round.

"We'll wait until spring and see how things go," Ebeling said.
