The postmatch talk lasted almost as long as the match itself.

The Indiana University East volleyball team held substantial a heart-to-heart chat following a 25-23, 25-13, 25-22 loss against Marian University on Oct. 9 in its second match at the Asbury College Invitational.

The Red Wolves (17-6) lost consecutive matches for the first time this season. IU East fell in five games against Bryan College earlier Oct. 9

"Any time you go 0-2 like that you start to question yourself," Red Wolves coach Charlie Brown said. "We talked about a lot of things, who we are, who we want to be, and how do we proceed.

"I expect (Oct. 10) to be a different day, with energy and effort. We want to get back to IU East volleyball."

Brown said the tough five-game loss against Bryan had an effect on the Red Wolves' play a few hours later against Marian (17-5).

"The fact we had (the Bryan match) in our fingertips and lost really put us in a desperate situation against Marian, and as a result of that we didn't come out on top of our game," Brown said. "(Marian) did. We didn't. We played with them, but when it was time to take control, we didn't do that."

IU East made late charges in Games 1 and 3, but came up short in both. The Knights controlled Game 2 from start to finish.

Junior middle hitter Jessica White (Sheldon, Ill./Kankakee Community College) led IU East with seven kills against Marian (17-5).

"Jess had a tremendous breakout day," Brown said. "She led the team in kills and had some nice blocks and really did a nice job of ball control at the net. She played exactly as we hoped. As we turn this corner of our season, that's how we need her to play."

Junior middle hitter Kristen Mahoney (Pendleton, Ind./Lincoln College) had two solo blocks and a block assist in one game. Madison Qualkenbush (New Castle, Ind./New Castle High School) made 11 digs.

The Red Wolves conclude their weekend in Asbury on Oct. 10 with matches against Webber International University at 9 a.m. and against St. Catharine College at 3 p.m.
