The IU East volleyball team concluded the Asbury Invitational with a 1-3 record.

The Red Wolves got two glimpses of what they want to become on Oct. 10.

The first glimpse came with a 25-6, 25-16, 25-10 win against St. Catharine College on Oct. 10 to conclude the Asbury College Invitational.

The win snapped a three-match losing streak. IU East (18-7) had lost its first three matches at the Asbury event.

Freshman defensive specialist Akeyta Mayes (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North High School) served up three aces within the first six points to set the tone against St. Catharine.

All of the Red Wolves played and contributed at least one positive statistic.

Freshman outside hitter Breezy Strete (Troy, Ohio/Troy High School) had the most positive statistics with 13 kills, two block solos and two block assists. Mayes finished with five aces. Sophomore defensive specialist Madison Qualkenbush (New Castle, Ind./New Castle High School) made seven digs. Freshman setter Lauren Crump (Indianapolis, Ind./Scecina Memorial High School) distributed 29 assists.

The Red Wolves hit at a .371 clip, including a .550 hitting percentage for Strete. IU East served up 13 aces.

"We played pretty well," said junior middle hitter Jessica White (Sheldon, Ill./Kankakee Community College). "We got everything figured out and got back to playing IU East volleyball."

The second glimpse came when the IU East players and coaches made their way to the other end of the Asbury gymnasium to catch the end of a high-level match between Marian University and NAIA No. 10 Madonna University.

The Red Wolves hope the lessons they learned at Asbury help them reach that level one day.

"It will help us," sophomore outside hitter April Acree (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown High School) said of the Red Wolves' 1-3 weekend. "Sure, we took some hard losses, but it will do nothing but improve us and make us work harder."

The Red Wolves return to action Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. against Urbana University. The match will be played at Seton Catholic High School. The floor at the Red Wolves' regular home facility, the Richmond High School Tiernan Center, is being resurfaced.
