IU East split two matches on the opening day of the 2017 season.

HUNTINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University East volleyball team started its season by splitting a pair of matches on the opening day of the Huntington University Forester Invitational on Aug. 18.

IU East started its day with a 25-11, 25-19, 26-24 setback against tournament host Huntington.

The Red Wolves bounced back for a 25-19, 25-18, 26-24 win against Robert Morris University (Ill.) later in the day.


* IU East had a set point in the third set of the morning match against Huntington, but the Foresters won the next three points to wrap up the match.

* IU East finished the first set against Robert Morris on a 13-4 surge. The Red Wolves then carried the momentum into the second set, building a 12-3 lead.

* Maria Brasel and Bailey Gates came up with back-to-back kills to clinch the afternoon victory for IU East after Robert Morris tied the third set at 24.


* IU East is 1-1. Huntington is 1-0. Robert Morris is 0-2.

* Bailey Gates put away 23 kills on the day, including 15 in the win against Robert Morris.

* Lexi Gentry posted a .368 hitting average for the day.

* Samantha Wigfield and Madison Yoder tallied double digits in digs in both matches.


"We definitely grew as a team today. Although we didn't get the outcome we wanted in our first match, we finished strong and made strides with our experience for being such a young team. I am extremely pleased with the effort all of the girls gave in both matches, regardless of what was on the scoreboard. Everyone is open to new ideas and concepts during the matches, and they take them in stride. I am excited to see how this season plays out with this group of girls!" - Bailey Gates


IU East plays two more matches at the Huntington University Forester Invitational on Aug. 19. The Red Wolves take on Missouri Valley College at 1 p.m. IU East concludes the tournament with a match against Grace College at 3 p.m.
