An 0-2 week for the Indiana University East volleyball team did produce one bright spot.
Sophomore libero Madison Qualkenbush (New Castle, Ind./New Castle High School) was named Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Oct. 26.
Qualkenbush led the Red Wolves (20-10, 4-0 KIAC) in digs in both IU East matches during the week of Oct. 19-25. Qualkenbush posted 18 digs against Ohio Dominican on Oct. 20 and 16 more digs against College of Mount St. Joseph on Oct. 24.
Qualkenbush recently became IU East's career leader in NAIA volleyball matches and games played.
"Coming into the season I had a big responsibility in taking the libero spot," Qualkenbush said. "That's a big duty in passing and talking in the back row. Comparing this year to last year, my passing has gotten a lot better and I've gotten a lot more confidence in myself in passing and knowing I have to be a leader in talking and helping the defense know where it has to be."
Qualkenbush is the third IU East player to win the KIAC weekly honor this season. Freshmen Lauren Crump (Indianapolis, Ind./Scecina Memorial High School) and Brandie Sanders (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike High School) received the award earlier this season.
The Red Wolves play at Marian University at 7 p.m. on Oct. 27.
