FRANKFORT, Ky. - Three-game losing streak? Over.

Twenty-seven-day wait for a victory against a team with a winning record? Finished.

Momentum for a pair of key conference matches? Plenty.

The Indiana University East volleyball team started a two-day, three-match road trip with a 25-20, 25-20, 25-18 victory at Kentucky State University on Oct. 30.

"Kentucky State was good, but we played well," Red Wolves coach Charlie Brown said. "We blocked better and we hit the ball better."

IU East improved to 21-11. Kentucky State is 20-8.

The Red Wolves emphatically terminated a skid of six consecutive losses against teams with winning records.

Freshman middle hitter Breezy Strete (Troy, Ohio/Troy High School) led IU East with 10 kills.

Freshman outside hitter Brandie Sanders (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike High School), sophomore outside hitter Courtney Flory (New Paris, Ohio/National Trail High School) and junior middle hitter Jessica White (Sheldon, Ill./Kankakee Community College) all had five kills apiece.

Freshman setter Lauren "Shoeless Lo" Crump (Indianapolis, Ind./Scecina Memorial High School) distributed 29 assists. Crump left her volleyball shoes in Richmond, but her mother brought a pair of shoes to Frankfort in time for the match. Plan B would have been to borrow IU East assistant Londa Brown's shoes.

"She forgot her shoes, but she didn't forget how to play," Charlie Brown said.

The Red Wolves play Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matches today at Midway College against Midway at 1 p.m. and against Mountain State University at 3 p.m.

"Hopefully this is a springboard to tomorrow," Brown said.
