The Red Wolves didn't look past Berea College.
They blasted through the Mountaineers instead.
The Indiana University East volleyball team defeated Berea 25-8, 25-14, 25-11 in the first of the Red Wolves' two Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matches on Nov. 7 at the Richmond High School Tiernan Center.IU East beat Indiana University Southeast later Nov. 7 in a match that determined the KIAC regular season title.
A loss against Berea (1-14, 0-7) would not have affected IU East's KIAC championship hopes, but the Red Wolves made sure it didn't happen.
Freshman defensive specialist Akeyta Mayes (Indianapolis, Ind/Lawrence North High School) served up aces on IU East's first two serves. Soon it was 12-1. And the Red Wolves were off and running.
IU East was able to rest its top two middle hitters for the last two games. A 4-0 deficit in Game 2 proved just a speed bump.
Sophomore outside hitter Kait Ervin (West Alexandria, Ohio/Twin Valley South High School) led IU East with seven kills. Sophomore outside hitter April Acree (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown High School) added five. Eight Red Wolves had at least three kills.
"A total team effort," said freshman middle hitter Breezy Strete (Troy, Ohio/Troy High School).
IU East served up 12 aces, with three apiece for sophomore libero Madison Qualkenbush (New Castle, Ind./New Castle High School), Mayes and freshman defensive specialist Kristin Waechter (Muncie, Ind./Daleville High School).
Qualkenbush led the Red Wolves with five digs. Freshman setter Lauren Crump distributed 29 assists.
