That sound you heard from the south on Nov. 7 was the Indiana University East men's basketball team's big sigh of relief following an 89-49 win against Miami University Hamilton on the final day of the Cincinnati Christian University Tipoff Classic.

The victory ended the Red Wolves' three-game losing streak to start the season.

"It's just nice to get a win," Red Wolves coach Mark Hester said. "When you're 0-3, you'll take a win whenever you can get it.

"Us winning, the volleyball team winning the regular season conference title and having two cross country runners qualify for nationals made it a good Saturday," Hester added.

Hester was able to keep tabs on the IU East volleyball team and cross country national qualifiers Zach Burns and Nicole House through his cell phone during the basketball team's time in Cincinnati.

IU East broke in front 25-4 and kept building its lead. The Red Wolves had five players in double figures.

Junior guard Brent Burris (Indianapolis, Ind.), junior guard Tyler Rigby (Bryant, Ind./Jay County High School) and senior forward Noah Douglas (Indianapolis, Ind./St. Joseph's College) led IU East with 13 points apiece. Douglas also grabbed seven rebounds.

Sophomore guard Steve Shepherd (Indianapolis, Ind./Arlington High School) and sophomore forward Devon Niehoff (Rushville, Ind./Rushville High School) added 11 points apiece.

Sophomore guard David Sanders (Indianapolis, Ind./Beech Grove High School) played a solid all-around game with nine points, six assists, three steals and four rebounds.

The Red Wolves made 20 steals and made 70 percent of their two-point field goal attempts (26 of 37).

The Harriers fell to 0-3. IU East limited Miami Hamilton to 18 field goals.

"In a game like that it's hard to keep the intensity up," Hester said. "We weren't focusing on score. We were talking about the things we've talked about since Day 1 - the process by which we go about our work.

"That means, are we giving effort? Are we paying attention to detail? Are we executing? And maybe we made some strides in those areas today."

IU East will play its first home game of the season Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Richmond High School Tiernan Center against Union College (Ky.).
