LIMA, Ohio - "IUE WINS BABY!"
The text message from Indiana University East volleyball coach Charlie Brown conveyed the excitement of the Red Wolves' record-smashing victory Nov. 10 at the University of Northwestern Ohio.
Breezy Strete set a school record for kills in a match, Lauren Crump set a school record for assists in a match, and IU East (27-11) picked up its seventh consecutive win with a 25-21, 29-27, 16-25, 23-25, 15-10 victory against the Racers (28-12) in the regular season finale for both teams."Talk about a dogfight," Brown said. "We just beat a very high-level team, a team that beat us like a drum last year."
Strete (Troy, Ohio/Troy High School), a freshman middle hitter, put away 26 kills. Amy Stultz held the previous record of 23, a mark she reached once in 2007 and again in 2008.
Crump (Indianapolis, Ind/Scecina Memorial High School), a freshman setter, distributed 67 assists, smashing her own previous record of 52.
IU East's team total of 71 kills also was a school record, breaking the old mark of 70 set in 2008 in a match against Indiana University Southeast.
Sophomore libero Madison Qualkenbush led IU East with 28 digs.
The Red Wolves bounced back from a shaky third game and a tough loss in the fourth game and pushed through the fifth game "in dominating fashion," according to Brown.
IU East next heads to the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament at Asbury College (Ky.). The Red Wolves are the No. 1 seed for the tourney. IU East will face No. 8 seed St. Louis College of Pharmacy or No. 9 seed Berea College in the quarterfinal round Nov. 13.
The semifinals and finals are Nov. 14.
"What a great way to go into the weekend," Brown said.
