The Red Wolves took a bite out of Union College.
The Indiana University East men's basketball team topped Union 78-59 on Nov. 10 at the Richmond High School Tiernan Center. It was the home opener for the Red Wolves.
"That's one bite down," said Red Wolves coach Mark Hester, whose team improved to 2-3.A message at the top of the chalkboard in the IU East locker room reminded the IU East players, "Persistence is biting off more than you can chew, and then chewing it."
To further hammer the message home, "Keep on chewing" was the final point in Hester's pregame chat.
The biggest Red Wolf, senior center Noah Douglas (Indianapolis, Ind./St. Joseph's College) took the biggest bite out of the Union defense.
Douglas finished with season highs of 19 points and 10 rebounds.
"I've been in his ear a lot, saying 'You've got to do it for us. You've got to keep us in it,'" said sophomore guard David Sanders (Indianapolis, Ind./Beech Grove High School). "I guess he listened to me this game."
Sanders and junior guard Tyler Rigby (Bryant, Ind./Jay County High School) added 13 points apiece.
Senior guard Justin Hawkins (Evansville, Ind./Kentucky Wesleyan College) had 11 points. Junior guard Brent Burris (Indianapolis, Ind.) contributed 10 points.
The Red Wolves led by four at the half despite making just 29 percent of their field goal attempts and 55 percent of their free throws in the first 20 minutes.
Union would get within one at 33-32 with 15:25 remaining. IU East responded with a 9-0 burst to take command.
The Red Wolves led by double digits for the last six minutes.
"I could tell we weren't going to shoot well from our warmups but we pushed through and built on the lead and got it to where we needed it to be," Sanders said.
"We picked it up on the defensive end. Then we started making shots. Once our shots start falling, there aren't many teams in the country that can beat us.
Jerome Carmichael led Union (0-2) with 15 points and five rebounds.
