INDIANAPOLIS - The Red Wolves' attack got turned back.
The Indiana University East men's basketball team fell 98-67 at NCAA Division I opponent IUPUI on Nov. 25 in "The Jungle."
The contest was an exhibition for the Red Wolves (4-4) but counted as a regular season game for the NCAA Division I Jaguars (5-1)."I'm disappointed in our lack of execution," said IU East coach Mark Hester. "We need to make an attempt to do things correctly, and I don't think we're doing that."
"Attack" was the theme of the game plan for the Red Wolves."Attack" was the first word on the first six points in the IU East game plan. The game plan concluded with a reminder for the Red Wolves to, "attack this opportunity."
Just one problem: Any time IU East mounted an attack, IUPUI would attack back.
Usually with a vengeance.
The Red Wolves attacked first. IU East got senior forward Noah Douglas (Indianapolis, Ind./St. Joseph's College) established in the post in the early going and led 9-3 in the early moments.
The Jaguars attacked back. IUPUI quickly erased the Red Wolves' advantage with hot shooting from behind the 3-point line and a big advantage in points off of turnovers. IUPUI would take the lead for good with 12:31 left in the first half on an Alex Young layup that made it 18-16.
IU East's highlight of the evening came when sophomore forward Will Madison (Fishers, Ind./Fishers High School) attacked the rim, dunked and drew a foul with 2:27 remaining in the first half. Madison made the free throw to make it 34-28.
IUPUI responded with a 15-0 counterattack. The surge spanned the end of the first half and the first three minutes of the second half. The big run gave IUPUI a 49-28 lead. The Jaguars would maintain a comfortable cushion the rest of the way.
"It was 42-28 (at halftime), but they made a quick run," Hester said. "If we come out on the defensive end and get some stops, we're right back in the game."
"Attack" was the Red Wolves' theme at the start of the day, but it had changed to "execution" by the final buzzer.
"We didn't execute very well on offense or defense," said junior guard Brent Burris (Indianapolis, Ind.). " We had a game plan of what we needed to do, We did (execute) a little bit in the first half, but the second half it seemed like it went out the window."
IUPUI made 74.1 percent of its field goal attempts in the second half and 67.3 percent for the game.
The Jaguars also sank 11 of 17 3-point attempts.
"Our defensive rotations weren't as good as they should have been in the second half, and they got some easy shots," Burris said,
Tyler Rigby (Bryant, Ind./Jay County High School) led IU East with 23 points. Douglas added 11.
Leroy Nobles led six players in double figures for IUPUI with 23 points.
The Red Wolves return to action Dec. 2 against Indiana Institute of Technology at 7 p.m. in the Richmond High School Tiernan Center.
