Lauren Crump, on her way to a school-record-tying 47 assists, urged on her Indiana University East volleyball teammates.
"Come on," she exhorted late in the fifth game of the Red Wolves' match Sept. 12 against St. Xavier University. "This is our game."
Unfortunately for IU East, it wasn't.
The Cougars rallied past the Red Wolves, 18-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-19, 15-12, to open the second day at the Cedarville University Invitational.
St. Xavier (8-5) would go on to win the tournament.
IU East (9-2) had a 2-1 lead in games, a 7-2 lead in the decisive fifth game, and the record-tying 47-assist performance from Crump (Indianapolis, Ind./Scecina High School).
But it wasn't enough.
The Cougars scored the last three points of the match to hand the Red Wolves their first five-game loss of the season. The Red Wolves had been 2-0 in five-game matches.
"They're a good team and you have to give them credit," freshman middle hitter Breezy Strete said. "We had them down and they came back."
Crump equaled the IU East single-match assist record first set by Amanda Martin in a 2007 match against Asbury College. Crump had tied the mark earlier this season in a five-game win against Rio Grande University.
"I have to get even more," Crump said. "I should get more than 10 a game. So it's nice to tie (the record), but I need more."
Stacie Muir (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville High School) and Breezy Strete (Troy, Ohio/Troy High School) had 13 kills apiece. Muir and Jessica White (Sheldon, Ill./Kankakee Community College) made four block assists apiece. White also had three aces. Brandie Sanders (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike High School) made 24 digs. Madison Qualkenbush (New Castle, Ind./New Castle High School) made 20 digs.
