Now that's how you break a school record.

Junior guard Brent Burris (Indianapolis, Ind.) broke the Indiana University East NAIA men's basketball record for career steals and also posted a double-double to lead the Red Wolves to an 84-56 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win against Asbury College on Thursday at the Richmond High School Tiernan Center.

Burris finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, along with seven assists. His two steals boosted his career total to 118, one ahead of the previous record established by DeCoreo Edwards at the conclusion of the 2008-09 season.

"It's always good to have your name in there (the record book), especially when you're starting a new program," said Burris, who also holds IU East's NAIA record for career assists.

The record-breaking steal came on a highlight-reel play with 15:23 remaining.

Burris stole the ball on the left sideline while falling out of bounds and flipped the ball behind his back to wide-open junior guard Tyler Rigby, who soared in for a slam dunk.

"I had fresh legs because I hadn't practiced all week," joked Burris, who was ill during the first part of the week. "They had been going to that corner, so I figured they would do it again, and I was able to make a play."

Rigby (Bryant, Ind./Jay County High School) led IU East's scorers with 21 points. Five Red Wolves scored in double figures. Senior forward Noah Douglas (Indianapolis, Ind./St. Joseph's College) also had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard David Sanders (Indianapolis, Ind./Beech Grove High School) contributed 12 points and seven assists.

IU East (10-7, 2-1) finished the first half on an 11-0 run to build a 40-25 lead.

The Red Wolves would lead by as much as 30 points in the second half.

"The second half we came out a little flat," said IU East coach Mark Hester. "We challenged them at halftime and we challenged them again at the first timeout to put the game away. It took us a little while, but we finally did it."

Added Burris: "I would rank this performance as one of the top ones for our team for this season. We still have things to work on, but overall our team play was solid, especially our defense."

Phillip Morrison led Asbury (9-9, 1-1) with 14 points - 10 points below his average.

Hester was particularly pleased with his team's defense and ball movement.

The Red Wolves' defense limited Asbury to a .280 field goal percentage.

IU East's ball movement resulted in a 42-24 advantage in points in the paint.

The Red Wolves play at KIAC opponent Brescia University on Jan. 16. Tip time is 5 p.m. (Richmond time).
