BEREA, Ky. - The Red Wolves hoped to produce a game film full of highlights.
Instead, it turned into a horror flick.
The Indiana University East men's basketball team fell 96-73 at Berea College in Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Feb. 12.This film starred Berea's Mikah Turner, the leading scorer in the NAIA Division II. Turner scored 35 points and went over the 2,000-point mark for his career to send the Red Wolves to their second consecutive loss.
"I told the players before the game, let's use this film to show how we do things right," said IU East coach Mark Hester. "I'm tired of our films showing what we're doing wrong, two or three things each possession showing what we're not doing right.
"But it was the same things tonight. It's disappointing."
Berea (17-9, 6-4) has won three straight since a loss at IU East on Feb. 1.
The Red Wolves fell to 12-11 overall and 4-5 in the KIAC.
The decisive scene started with about 10 minutes left and IU East down by 10.
"Let's get it down to six points by the six minute mark," Red Wolves guard Steve Shepherd (Indianapolis, Ind./Arlington High School) encouraged his teammates in a timeout.
Instead, the Mountianeers went on an 11-1 run to go ahead 83-63 at the six-minute mark.
IU East got no closer than 14 the rest of the way.
The Red Wolves had been within two earlier in the second half.
Turner was the star, but Berea's Josh Clark stepped up with a strong supporting actor performance. Clark finished with 23 points. He previously averaged six points per game.
"He did a great job stepping up," Hester said. "We told our guys someone would step up (for Berea, which had some players ill and unavailable) because they're too proud to lay down."
Senior forward Noah Douglas (Indianapolis, Ind./St. Joseph's College) led IU East with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Junior guard Tyler Rigby (Bryant, Ind./Jay County High School) added 11 points and is now 22 points shy of 1,000 for his IU East career.
The Red Wolves play at KIAC opponent Alice Lloyd College on Feb. 13 at 2 p.m.
"That's one of great things about basketball," Hester said. "You've always got to get ready to play tomorrow, and that's what we've got to do."
A live audio broadcast of the IU East-Alice Lloyd game game is scheduled for www.iueredwolves.com.
