A late night turned into a career night for a trio of Red Wolves.
Sophomore guard David Sanders (Indianapolis, Ind./Beech Grove High School) scored a career-high 22 points, senior forward Jacobe Edmondson scored a career-high 14 points and sophomore guard Steve Shepherd (Indianapolis, Ind./Arlington High School) scored a career-high 13 points as the Indiana University East men's basketball team defeated Cincinnati Christian University 101-86 on Feb. 16 in a Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest.
The game started at 9 p.m. in the Richmond High School Tiernan Center to conclude a tripleheader that began with the Richmond High School and Anderson High School junior varsity and varsity boys basketball games."After our last loss (Feb. 13 at Alice Lloyd College) we had a big talk in our locker room about how everyone needed to step up and focus," Shepherd said. "A lot of people were ready to contribute tonight."
Six Red Wolves scored in double figures. Junior guard Tyler Rigby (Bryant, Ind./Jay County High School) grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds to go along with 18 points.
IU East (13-12, 5-6) remained in contention for a top-four spot in the KIAC standings and the right to host a KIAC Tournament quarterfinal game.
CCU, which entered the game as the top scoring team in the NAIA Division II, fell to 12-14 overall and 2-8 in the KIAC.
The Red Wolves avenged a 120-113 loss in Cincinnati on Jan. 26.
Joe Mendenhall and Darriel Hunter scored 18 points apiece for the Eagles.
IU East finished the first half on a 19-5 run to erase a 32-30 deficit and take a 49-37 lead at the break.
The Red Wolves would lead by as much as 23 in the second half.
IU East forced 20 CCU turnovers and enjoyed a 22-8 advantage in points off of turnovers.
"We were much more focused than what we've had the last couple of games, and I'm very proud of them for that," said IU East coach Mark Hester.
The Red Wolves improved to 8-1 at home.
"That's kind of our calling card," Hester said. "At home we have a much better effort on the defensive end.
"Fortunately we have our last two games at home, so hopefully the defensive effort will be there."
The Red Wolves host Brescia University at 7 p.m. on Feb. 18 in the Tiernan Center. The contest is a makeup of a game originally scheduled for Feb. 9.
IU East concludes the regular season with a home game at 2 p.m. Feb. 20 against KIAC leader Indiana University Southeast.
