The "basketball gods" provided the Red Wolves with an improbable opportunity.

They'll try to make the most of it on Feb. 23.

The Indiana University East men's basketball team will host Asbury College on Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. in the Earlham College Athletics & Wellness Center.

The contest is a Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference quarterfinal.

IU East typically plays its home games at Richmond High School, but KIAC Tournament games must be played on a college-length floor.

The Red Wolves (14-13, 6-7) earned the right to host the game after an improbable week that saw IU East move into fourth place in the KIAC on the final day of the regular season. The top four teams earned the right to host KIAC Tournament quarterfinal games.

"The basketball gods keep giving us opportunities," Red Wolves senior guard Bijon Jones (Jackson, Tenn./Southeast Missouri State University) told his teammates in what proved to be a prophetic comment after IU East's game at Alice Lloyd College on Feb. 13.

IU East and Asbury (14-16, 6-7) split a pair of meetings during the regular season.

The Red Wolves beat the Eagles 84-56 in Richmond on Jan. 14.

Asbury returned the favor with a 94-81 home win on Feb. 4.

IU East won the tiebreaker for fourth place by virtue of a better record against KIAC regular season champion Indiana University Southeast.

Junior guard Phillip Morrison leads Asbury with 20.4 points per game.

IU East gets 19.4 points per game from junior guard Tyler Rigby (Bryant, Ind./Jay County High School). Rigby ranks among the NAIA Division II's top 50 in seven offensive categories.

Senior forward Noah Douglas (Indianapolis, Ind./St. Joseph's College) adds 12.5 points per game and leads IU East with 7.0 rebounds per game.

Douglas also ranks 21st in NAIA Division II in field goal percentage at .563.

Douglas broke IU East's NAIA season and career record for double-doubles with double-digit efforts in points and rebounds in the Red Wolves' final two regular season games.

Douglas has eight double-doubles in his senior season. The previous record was seven, established by Bryant Withers during the 2007-08 season.

Sophomore guard David Sanders contributes 9.7 points per game and ranks 29th in the NAIA Division II in assists per game with 4.3

IU East finished the regular season with a 9-2 home record.

"(Playing Asbury at home) will be a big help since we have a good home record," Douglas said. "Then hopefully we can go on the road and make a push for the conference championship."

The IU East-Asbury winner will face No. 1 seed IU Southeast or No. 8 seed St. Louis College of Pharmacy in a KIAC Tournament semifinal at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26 at the Frankfort Convention Center in Frankfort, Ky.

The KIAC Tournament championship game is 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27 at the Frankfort Convention Center.

IU East reached the KIAC Tournament championship game last season.
