Richmond area tennis enthusiasts will see a familiar face at the top of the first Indiana University East men's tennis lineup.

Pete Chimenti, a former No. 1 singles player at Richmond High School, on Feb. 26 signed a letter of intent to play for the Red Wolves' men's tennis team this spring.

Chimenti, a junior, likely will play at the top of the lineup for IU East.

The Red Wolves are scheduled to open their inaugural NAIA season March 6 at Indiana University Southeast.

"I really wanted to play tennis again," Chimenti said. "I haven't played for a couple of years, and I've really missed it."

Chimenti played No. 1 singles for Richmond's most recent IHSAA regional championship team in 2006. The Red Devils pushed eventual state champion Park Tudor to a 3-2 match in the team state tournament round of 16.

He also was a second-team all-North Central Conference selection as a senior.

Chimenti attended Indiana University after graduating from RHS in 2007. He is working toward his degree in public health this semester at IU East.

Red Wolves coach Mike Sherer watched Chimenti throughout his high school career and looks forward to working with him at IU East.

"He's a good serve-volley type of player who gives us the presence we need at the top of the lineup during our first season," Sherer said.

Sherer also announced the signing of Jimmy Woollard of Fairhaven, Ohio.

Woollard, a freshman, will provide needed depth for the first IU East team.

"I joined the team because I really liked (Sherer) and because I always wanted to be involved in a sport or extracurricular activity at college," said Woollard, a graduate of Lighthouse Christian Academy in Gratis, Ohio.

Woollard is a social work major.
