Golfers of Indiana University East, unite!

Red Wolves coach Von Ebeling says the IU East men's golf team will need a spirit of unity to achieve its goals for the 2010 season.

The Red Wolves open the season March 19 at the Brescia Bearcat Shootout.

"For this team to be successful, the players will have to be aware of their roles and excel to the best of their ability," Ebeling said.

IU East returns two players from a team that finished second in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 2009.

Junior Nick Ary (Brookville, Ohio/Brookville High School) was an all-KIAC selection for the second consecutive season and averaged 79.1 strokes per 18 holes.

Ary will play the No. 1 spot for the Red Wolves this spring.

Senior Mark Bevins (Hollansburg, Ohio/Tri-Village High School) averaged 83.9 strokes per 18 holes and starts the 2010 season as IU East's No. 2 golfer.

Bevins was the KIAC medalist when the Red Wolves won the KIAC team title in 2008. Bevins also was a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete last season.

"Mark Bevins and Nick Ary will have to supply the leadership in their roles of upperclassmen," Ebeling said.

"They are an integral part of the success is this program has been able to accomplish in the past. I look for Nick and Mark to challenge each other to shoot in the 70s."

Freshman Derrick McNeely (Connersville, Ind./Connersville High School) starts the season as the Red Wolves' No. 3 golfer.

McNeely was the only IU East golfer to take part in all three of the Red Wolves' fall competitions. He averaged 93.3 strokes per 18 holes during the fall, but worked hard to improve during the winter.

"Derrick is a returning freshman who has shown maturity for his age," Ebeling said. "He has spent some time training at an indoor facility in Muncie.

"I look for steady play from Derrick."

Freshman Zack Palmer (Richmond, Ind./Richmond High School) is new to the IU East program, but he is not new to the area.

Palmer was the No. 1 golfer at Richmond High School as a junior and a senior.

He was an all-conference selection as a junior and senior and helped the Red Devils win the conference team title as a senior.

Palmer attended IUPUI during the fall before transferring to IU East for the spring semester. He will start the season as IU East's No. 4 golfer.

Brandon Loomis (Union City, Ind./Union City Community High School) will round out the lineup for the Red Wolves.

"I'm challenging Brandon to stay in the 80s and be there in case one of the top four has trouble with their games," Ebeling said. "He is a smart athlete and is a welcomed addition to the team."

IU East's only home meet is March 30 against Oakland City University at Highland Lake Golf Course.

The IU East men will compete in five regular season tournaments leading up to the KIAC meet April 23 and 24 at Battlefield Golf Course in Richmond, Ky.

The men then will take part in an NAIA National Championships Qualifying Meet with teams from the KIAC and Association of Independent Institutions on April 29 and 30 at Jefferson Country Club in Blacklick, Ohio.

The Red Wolves are united in their primary goal: Advance to the NAIA National Championships for the first time in the program's history.
