TIFFIN, Ohio - The opening round of the Heidelberg University Collegiate Classic proved anything but a breeze for the Red Wolves' golfers.

The Indiana University East men's golf team is seventh out of eight teams after a windy first round at Mohawk Golf and Country Club.

The Red Wolves finished the first 18-hole round with a 365 and are one shot out of sixth place.

Adrian College leads with a 317.

"It was a windy day and scores were high," said IU East coach Von Ebeling.

"It was so windy that some guys were trying to hit out of bunkers and as soon as they swung they would have to shield their eyes because sand was blowing in their eyeballs."

Junior Nick Ary (Brookville, Ohio/Brookville High School), the reigning KIAC Men's Golfer of the Week, got off to a strong start but finished with an 82 on the par-72 layout. Ary is in 11th place.

Andy Kronander (38-35), Jon Kuiper (37-36) and Jordan Barber are tied for first in the 46-player field with a 73.

IU East senior Mark Bevins (Hollansburg, Ohio/Tri-Village High School) and freshman Zack Palmer (Richmond, Ind./Richmond High School) shot 93 are are tied for 33rd.

Freshman Brandon Loomis (Union City, Ind./Union City Community High School) shot 97 and is in 36th place.

Freshman Derrick McNeely (Connersville, Ind./Connersville High School) shot 102 and is in 43rd place.

Red Wolves freshman Courtney Barlage (Versailles, Ohio/Versailles High School) shot 102 and was tied for 25th out of 44 in the women's tournament.

Barlage sustained a hand injury during her round and is questionable for the final round.

Lelie Walker of Washington and Jefferson leads the women's tournament with an 84.

The tournament concludes April 2.
