MARION, Ind. - With a miraculous 'finishing kick,' Indiana University East junior Vanessa Legg leaped into the top five at the Little State Invitational women's high jump competition.

Legg (Lynn, Ind./Randolph Southern High School) matched her season best with a jump of 1.57 meters (5 feet, 1.75 inches) to finish in a tie for fourth in a women's high jump field of 25 at the Little State Invitational on April 9 at Indiana Wesleyan University.

Legg cleared 1.57 meters with a couldn't-do-that-again-if-she-tried moment.

Legg brushed the crossbar on her ascent and thought she had missed her attempt. However, Legg's leg accidentally knocked the crossbar into the air and back onto the two standards.

Good jump!

"Everyone was laughing and couldn't believe it," said IU East athletic director Mark Hester, who accompanied the Red Wolves' athletes to the meet.

Legg had a jump high enough to clear the next height (1.62 meters), but hit the crossbar with her shoulder on her ascent.

Kailey Honn of Manchester won the high jump with a leap of 1.67 meters (5-5.75)

IU East sophomore Kait Ervin (West Alexandria, Ohio/Twin Valley South High School) represented the Red Wolves in the shot put.

Ervin likely exceeded her season best of 9.18 meters. Official measurements were taken only for throws of more than 10 meters to speed up a competition that included 44 entrants.

"Kait did better than she did last week and was happy with how she threw," Hester said.

Alexis DeJean of St. Joseph's College won the shot put with a throw of 13.99 meters (45-10.75)

Ervin will take part in the discus throw April 10 during the final day of the Little State Invitational.

The meet is open to all non-NCAA Division I track and field programs in Indiana.
