The Red Wolves established a fast pace for the 2009 cross country season.

The Indiana University East cross country runners posted encouraging times during the Shawnee State Invitational on Sept. 4. It was the Red Wolves' first race of the 2009 season.

IU East did not have enough runners to field a full men's or women's team, but the Red Wolves' top runners posted the best times in two-year-old program's history.

Freshman Zach Burns (Cambridge City, Ind./Cambridge City Lincoln) led the IU East men with an 8K time of 27:38, good for 16th place. Burns' time was about five minutes faster than any IU East men's 8K time posted in 2008. Burns was almost 10 minutes faster than the Red Wolves' top runner at the 2008 Shawnee State Invitational.

James Healton (Centerville, Ind./Centerville High School) was 36th in 32:05. Jon Strong (Connersville, Ind./Connersville High School) finished 46th n 34:48. Nick Reece (Fountain City, Ind./RichmondHigh School) finished 54th n 51:27.

Nicole House (Hagerstown, Ind./Hagerstown High School) led the Red Wolves women's team with a 5K time of 22:13, good for 24th place. House's time was better than any IU East women's 5K time from the 2008 season and was 2:38 faster than her time at the 2008 Shawnee State Invitational.

Kelsey West (Cambridge City, Ind./Lincoln High School) was 39th and completed the course in 24:38. Vanessa Legg (Lynn, Ind./Randolph Southern High School) was 55th in 28:57. Legg went 2:19 faster than her time at the 2008 Shawnee State meet.

"I was very pleased with everyone's times," IU East coach Pam Mertz said. "I couldn't ask any more from anyone."

Shawnee State won the boys team title. Cedarville won the girls team title.
