Two short years later, he helped Hagerstown (Ind.) High School win the first boys tennis sectional championship in school history.
Just imagine how good Morris might get by the end of his career with the Indiana University East men's tennis program.
Morris, a 2009 Hagerstown High School graduate, has signed a letter of intent to play tennis for IU East starting with the 2010-11 school year.
Red Wolves coach Mike Sherer announced the signing April 22.
"He's going to bring a lot of new, fresh enthusiasm to the program, and he gives us another local person to strengthen our roster," Sherer said.
"I look forward to helping him as he develops his game playing at IU East."
Morris moved up in the lineup during all three of his seasons in the Hagerstown program. He played No. 2 singles for the Tigers' sectional championship team in 2008.
He also won his flight at the Hagerstown Invitational as a junior and a senior.
He spent the 2009-10 school year at IUPUI, but did not play tennis.
"My fiancee and I got to talking about me playing on a team somewhere," Morris said. "I looked into IU East and hoped they would have a program.
"Tennis is a fun sport you can play no matter what age you are, and I like the competition
Morris points to his serves and volleys as the strongest parts of his game.
Sherer got positive reviews about Morris from Chris Robertson, who coached Morris at Hagerstown.
"According to Chris, Josh is a very hard worker and goal-oriented young man who will give you everything you want from him," Sherer said.
Morris plans to major in criminal justice with an eye toward becoming a law enforcement officer.
Morris is the grandson of Sherry Fry. He is engaged to Chealsea Whistler. He also thanks family friend Kelly Bicknell.
