TERRE HAUTE - Indiana University East track and field athletes Vanessa Legg and Kait Ervin thought the same thing while watching the javelin competition during the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference meet on April 24:

"We can do that!"

Legg and Ervin proved it during the Pacesetter Invitational on May 1 at Indiana State University's Marks Field.

Legg (Lynn, Ind./Randolph Southern High School) and Ervin (West Alexandria, Ohio/Twin Valley South High School) both performed well in the first javelin competition of their lives.

Legg placed seventh in the field of 10 with a throw of 29.54 meters (about 96-11). Legg's mark would have won the KIAC meet by more than two meters.

Ervin was ninth with a throw of 21.43 meters (about 70-4). Ervin would have finished in the top four at the KIAC meet with that mark.

The javelin results accounted for two of IU East's four top-10 finishes on May 1.

Ervin was seventh out of 13 in the shot put with a season-best throw of 10.57 meters (about 34-8).

Legg placed eighth out of 10 in the high jump with a leap of 1.50 meters (about 4-11).

"A better-than-average day," said IU East athletic director Mark Hester, who worked with the Red Wolves' athletes during the meet.

Ervin also placed 12th of 16 in the discus with a throw of 31.30 meters (about 102-8).

Legg was 14th of 16 in the 200 in 28.86.
