Matt Trimnell, a senior at Seymour (Ind.) High School and the No. 7 scorer in Indiana this past season, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Indiana University East starting with the 2010-11 school year.
Red Wolves coach Mark Hester announced the signing May 10.
Trimnell is a 6-4 guard who averaged 24.4 points per game, 7.8 rebounds per game and 2.3 assists per game. He was seventh in the state in free throw percentage at .879.
He is Seymour's No. 5 all-time leading scorer with 1,298 career points.
"On paper, he's the most decorated recruit we've ever had," Hester said. "He's going to have a lot of expectations on and off of the court, but his college career could be as good as he wants it to be in every aspect.
"Our fans are really going to like getting to watch him and getting to know him both on and off of the court."
Trimnell was an honorable mention all-state selection and participated in Indiana's Top 60 Workout. He was an All-Hoosier Hills Conference choice and made the Louisville Courier-Journal's Indiana all-area team.
He was a Senior All-State selection by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.
He is considered one of the sharpest shooters in the state. He also made 52 percent of his field goals attempts and 39 percent of his 3-point field goals.
He scored a career-high 42 points and made a school-record nine 3-pointers in a win against Floyd Central, a team led by fellow IU East signee and summer league teammate Cody Banet.
(He did get outshot after the May 10 signing ceremony by Tyler Rigby, an IU East senior-to-be. Rigby made a series of left-handed jumpers to hand Trimnell his first loss at H-O-R-S-E in the Seymour gym).
Trimnell plans to major in accounting. He is the son of Teri Trimnell.
He also considered NCAA Division II power Bellarmine University.
"I felt I fit in better with the players and was more accepted than anywhere I visited," Trimnell said. "It felt perfect. There were a lot of unselfish players getting the ball to players who can score."
Trimnell is the eighth signee is IU East's 2010 recruiting class. He joins Banet, Ian Enriquez of Lake Station, Sean Stevens of Newburgh, Justin Gill of Munster, Terry Weathers of East Chicago, Brock (Barbary) Duke of Kokomo and Bakari Smith of Indianapolis.
