KENDALLVILLE - The younger members of the Indiana University East golf team learned some tough lessons Aug. 31 on the opening day of the fall golf season.
The Red Wolves, who started three freshmen and a sophomore, carded a team score of 413 in the opening round of the St. Francis Invitational at Cobblestone Golf Club.
Indiana Wesleyan leads the field with a 292.
Derrick McNeely (Connersville, Ind./Connersville High School) led IU East with an 88 in his first collegiate competition.
Brock Edwards (Winchester, Ind./Winchester High School) carded a 93. Kacey Stollar (Greenville, Ohio/The Villages, Fla., High School) finished with a 113. Holden Smith (New Paris, Ohio/National Trail High School) rounded out the lineup with a 119.
"It's a very competitive tournament on a tougher course we've never played before," Red Wolves coach Von Ebeling said.
The tournament concludes Sept. 1 with 18 holes at Noblehawk Golf Club.
