The Red Wolves' track and field pack gained a good student-athlete and a good citizen.

Jeremy Sorrell, a recent Cambrdge City (Ind.) Lincoln High School graduate, has signed a letter of intent to compete in track and field for Indiana University East.

New Red Wolves track and field coach Tyler Daugherty announced the signing July 15.

Sorrell will compete in throwing events for IU East.

"From his personal bests it looks like he'll make an instant impact with the team and in the conference," Daugherty said.

Sorrell won a sectional championship in the discus throw during his senior season at Lincoln. He won a sectional title in the shot put as a junior to help Lincoln earn the track and field program's first team sectional championship.

He was the local Small School Invitational field events MVP as a senior. He won the shot put and/or discus and several regular season invitationals during his senior season, including a conference championship in the discus.

He has personal bests of 148-11 in the discus and 49-0 in the shot put.

Sorrell also made an impact out of the throwing circle during his high school career.

Sorrell received a Lincoln High School citizenship award. He served as a teacher's assistant at Western Wayne Elementary. He took part in organizations such as Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), Youth Empowered to Serve (YES), peer helpers and the Lincoln student advisory board.

Jeremy is the son of Darrell and Tammy Sorrell. He plans to major in elementary education.

"I saw the IU East billboards and some of my friends are coming here too, so I looked into it," Sorrell said. "When I found out they had a track and field program I looked more into it more and decided to visit.

"It's close to home, and I liked how everyone is friendly."

IU East is an NAIA track and field program. The Red Wolves will field full teams for the first time during the 2010-11 school year.
