RICHMOND, Ind. - Indiana University East's latest signee speaks softly but swings a mean golf club.

Asia Mathis, a recent Indianapolis North Central graduate, has signed a letter of intent to play golf for Indiana University East.

Red Wolves coach Von Ebeling announced the signing July 28.

Mathis finished her senior season as the No. 3 player for North Central's girls golf team. She earned medal honors at one of the Panthers' meets.

She considers her drives to be the strength of her game.

"Coming in as a freshman, Asia needs to realize she has great potential," Ebeling said. "I foresee her making strides with each event she puts under her belt."

Asia is the daughter of Donna and Michael Mathis. She is leaning toward majoring in culinary arts.

"The school has opened up a women's golf team and that's why I came," she said after signing her letter of intent. "It's a smaller campus with small classes, and I thought that would be best for me."

Mathis also volunteers her time to teach golf to youngsters at Douglas Park in Indianapolis.

"She possesses the 'Champions of Character' traits our program desires," Ebeling said.

Ebeling also thanks North Central athletic director Chuck Jones for his role in Mathis' recruitment.

Mathis joins Ashley Mullin (Richmond, Ind.), Cassie Hofacker (Pitsburgh, Ohio), Stacey Davis (New Paris, Ohio), Meredith Craig (Mentone, Ind.) and Jordyn Sparks (Liberty, Ind.) in IU East's 2010 women's golf recruiting class.

The Red Wolves will compete in a short fall season in preparation for the regular season in the spring.
