Indiana University East's new cross country course is getting quite a workout.

IU East hosted the Wayne County Open high school meet on the new course Aug. 24.

The 5K high school event was held just 38 days after the successful Run with the Wolves community 5K.

Three Wayne County cross country programs were represented on Aug. 24.

IU East hopes to find a date that will attract all six Wayne County schools in future years.

The top boys and girls teams took home traveling trophies. The top 10 individuals received medals. The top three in each race were honored on an Olympic-style podium. School songs were played to honor the race winners.

More than 100 students and fans visited the IU East campus for the Aug. 24 meet.

"Its another sign of how far we've come," said IU East athletic director Mark Hester.

"A few years ago we couldn't even think about hosting an athletic event. And today we hosted a both golf meet (IU East hosted the IU East Fall tee-Off Tournament) and a cross country meet."

The recent improvements to the IU East Cross County Course were possible thanks to the generous support of Reid Hospital & Health Care Service.

IU East is scheduled to host its first intercollegiate cross country meet on Sept. 7 at 5 p.m.

IU East also will host the Tri-Eastern Conference high school meet Oct. 7.

"It's our effort to give back to the Richmond community, now that we are in position to host events on our campus," Hester said.
