Abby Niekamp was named the head volleyball coach and assistant sports information director at Indiana University East on March 14, 2014. Niekamp has been serving as the school's interim head volleyball coach since the previous October. She joined the Red Wolves program as an assistant coach in the summer of 2013.

"We are delighted Abby has accepted the offer to be our volleyball head coach," said IU East Chancellor Kathryn Cruz-Uribe. “She emerged from the search process as the best fit for the Red Wolves volleyball program, and we are excited about the team’s future under Abby’s leadership.”

Niekamp played four years at the NCAA Division I level. She played one season at Florida State University and three seasons at the University at Buffalo, primarily as a middle blocker. She was a two-time team captain and a second-team all-Mid-American Conference honoree at Buffalo.

"Abby was always a person of high character and integrity. She was a leader on and off of the court and always did the right thing athletically, academically and as a representative of the university," said Todd Kress, Niekamp's coach at Buffalo. "Abby is knowledgeable and passionate about the sport. Most importantly, Abby is a people person who cares about her student-athletes. She will make a great head coach."

Niekamp is a native of Celina, Ohio. She played for a state championship team at Marion Local High School and later was an assistant coach for Marion Local's 2012 Ohio state championship team.  Niekamp worked primarily with the hitters and blockers, specifically middle blockers. She helped develop and implement the program's off-season lifting regimen.

"I have no doubt Abby will be a successful head coach at IU East," said Amy Steininger, a five-time state champion coach who was Niekamp's coach at Marion Local. "Her passion and love for volleyball is evident in her coaching and work ethic. She is a fierce competitor and strives for greatness on and off the court. This is a great hire for IU East!"

Niekamp has coached at camps for Buffalo as well as satellite camps run by Ohio State University and the University of Dayton.

Niekamp earned a bachelor's degree in English at Buffalo and earned her master's degree in coaching education from Ohio University.

IU East compiled a 20-13 record during Niekamp's first full year in 2014, including a run of 17 wins in 22 games to conclude the season.

The Red Wolves then posted a 24-15 mark in 2015 and improved to second place in the conference standings. IU East again finished strong, with 12 wins in 16 matches to conclude the year.

Kim McConaha, a Centerville, Ind. native who played volleyball at Purdue University and at the professional level, has been appointed as an assistant volleyball coach at Indiana University East in June orf 2017.

"We are fortunate to be able to add Kim to our coaching staff," said IU East head coach Abby Niekamp. "Her volleyball background speaks for itself, having played at Purdue and professionally overseas. She sees the game from a unique perspective, which will transition well into relating to our new recruits this fall.

"Kim’s excitement and eagerness to be a part of our program and to help it succeed is astounding. Wayne County is home for her, which makes her commitment to this program even stronger. I have no doubt that Kim will have an immediate and strong impact on our program, and I’m looking forward to getting this season started with her."

McConaha played at Purdue from 2001 through 2004, where she was a first-team All-Big Ten and honorable mention All-Mideast Region honoree. She then embarked on a professional career that included stints in France, Spain, Swizterland, Puerto Rico and Indonesia between 2005 and 2010. She also played professionally in Tunisia in 2015-16.

McConaha coached the men's and women's volleyball teams at American University of Kuwait between 2011 and 2015. She also served as an assistant coach at Earlham College in 2011 and at UC Irvine during the 2016 season. She most recently coached at Mission Viejo (Calif.) High School.

She has coached at camps in Alaska, Oregon, Texas, Georgia, Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana, including annual appearances at Purdue's summer camp.

McConaha is married to Bruno Amorim Da Silva, a professional volleyball player from Brazil who competes on the indoor and beach circuits. The couple's daughter, Athena, was born in 2013.

McConaha earned her bachelor's degree in business management from Purdue's Krannert School of Management in 2005. She is completing her master's degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University Irvine (Calif.).

"Players should come to IU East to feel like they are part of a community, a place to be successful and a place where everyone is supporting them to be successful," McConaha said.
