Men's Golf: Purgatory Intercollegiate Day 1 Recap

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. - The Indiana University East men's golf team is fifth after the opening day of the Purgatory Intercollegiate.

The Red Wolves carded a 313 in difficult weather conditions, while host Taylor University leads the 13-team field with a 294.

"Outstanding effort from everyone," IU East coach Jeff Williams said. "To post four scores in the 70s under these conditions is testament to the mental toughness and maturity of this team."

Jake Miller had a 77 to lead the Red Wolves and is tied for 18th.

"It is great to see on the rare occasion when Jake is a little off his game, the others are there to pick him up," Williams said.

Austin Shelley was next with a 78 to put him in a tie for 23rd.

Sam Firebaugh and Emiliano Tercero are tied for 29th as both posted a 79. Sam Roberts finished with an 84 that put him in a tie for 52nd, while Alex Beatty had an 86 and is 61st out of 73 players.

Saturday's final round at the Purgatory Golf Club gets underway with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.
