HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Indiana University East men’s soccer team notched its second straight win of the season with a commanding 3-0 victory over the University of Cincinnati–Clermont Cougars on Saturday, Sept. 16.
The match was played at the Northern Kentucky University soccer complex. Callum Coleman and Dillon Gross provided the scoring attack for the Red Wolves. Coleman has scored four goals in two matches this week, and Gross scored his first two of the season.
In a back and forth first half where both teams had plenty of chances, it was Coleman who found the back of the net in the 39th minute when he connected on a free kick from 25 yards out. This gave IU East a 1-0 lead heading into intermission.
Peter Lamprou came up with a few timely saves in the first 45 minutes that helped the Red Wolves maintain their slim advantage.
The Red Wolves picked up where they left off, when Gross got the second half scoring underway with an upper right hand corner goal in the 62nd minute to give IU East a 2-0 lead. The match turned physical in the latter stages when UC-Clermont had a player ejected with a straight red card in the 87th minute, and that’s when Gross and the Red Wolves struck for the final time in the 90th minute with another left footed strike that found the net.
The Red Wolves outshot the Cougars 18-13 with eight of the shots on frame. Lamprou and Visscher each played one half in the victory had three saves each to secure the second straight shutout for the Red Wolves.
IU East returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 23 when the Red Wolves jump into River States Conference play with a road match against the University of Rio Grande at 7 p.m.
