Tennis: IU East-Defiance preview

The Indiana University East tennis teams travel to Defiance College on Oct. 8.

Match time is 4:30 p.m.

The IU East women are 1-4 and the Defiance women are 0-10.

The IU East men are 4-4 for the fall season. Defiance has not reported any fall men's results. The Yellow Jackets were 11-9 last season.

LAST TIME OUT

The IU East men won 9-0 and the women fell 4-3 against Miami University Hamilton on Oct. 5.

This is the first women's tennis meeting between IU East and Defiance.

Defiance edged the IU East men 5-4 last spring in the only meeting between the schools.

IU EAST STORYLINES

* The IU East women have won six of seven contested individual matches over the past week, winning all three contested matches against Miami University Middletown on Oct. 2 and winning three of four contested matches against Miami University Hamilton on Oct. 5.

* Sophomore Jordyn Bowman (New Castle, Ind./Tri High School) is 3-2 at No. 2 singles and sophomore Alex Estes (Carthage, Ind./Knightstown High School) is 2-2 in her singles matches.

* The IU East men are 2-0 against teams from Defiance's league (Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) this fall.

* Freshman Colton Shipley (Gas City, Ind./Mississinewa High School) leads the IU East men with a 5-3 singles record, mainly at No. 4 and No. 5 singles.

* The No. 1 doubles team of senior Ty Butler (Wadesville, Ind./North Posey High School) and Connor Kramer (Shirley, Ind./Eastern Hancock High School) and the No. 2 doubles team of Shipley and senior Derek Blank (Buchanan, Mich./Buchanan High School) lead the Red Wolves with four doubles wins apiece.

* IU East won the top two singles and doubles spots against Defiance when the teams played this past spring.

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION

The Defiance women have been strongest at No. 3 singles, with 40 percent of the Yellow Jackets' individual wins this season at that spot.

The Defiance men were fourth in the HCAC last season. Seven of the nine players on the Defiance roster were underclassmen.
