Women's Basketball: IU East 75, IU Southeast 73 OT
NEW ALBANY, Ind. - Kennedy Griffin hit six free throws in the final 23 seconds of overtime as the Indiana University East women's basketball team defeated IU Southeast 75-73 on Tuesday, Jan. 30.
With half of IU East's points in the extra session, Griffin helped the Red Wolves hang on for the River States Conference victory as she scored a game-high 26 points converting 11-of-12 from the charity stripe.
The Red Wolves are now 9-12 with a 4-7 record in the league, while IU Southeast is 8-11, 5-7.
Davina Smith was next in the scoring column for the Red Wolves with 13 points and a dozen rebounds.
Taylor Farris also finished with 13 points. Peyton Wells added a season-high 11 points for IU East.
The opening period was tight as the Grenadiers led 19-17 at the first stop.
IU Southeast widened its advantage to 30-23 in the second frame at the 5:48 mark before the Red Wolves rallied with a 13-4 run the rest of the way.
Caitlin McEldowney's 3-pointer in the final moments before the intermission put IU East on top 36-34.
After the contest was tied 43-43 with 5:15 left in the third, IU Southeast pulled away to lead 57-48 heading into the final stanza.
The Red Wolves responded by outscoring IU Southeast 15-6 to send the contest into overtime as Smith's rebound basket with two seconds remaining tied it at 63-63.
IU East is back in action at home against Midway University on Saturday, Feb. 3. The RSC contest on Lingle Court starts at 1 p.m.
