Women's Basketball: SMWC 73, IU East 68
RICHMOND, Ind. – Caitlin McEldowney hit six 3-pointers and Davina Smith tallied a double-double but their comeback bid fell short against St. Mary of the Woods on Thursday.
The Red Wolves fell to the Pomeroys 73-68.
The loss drops IU East to 9-15 overall and 4-10 in conference. The Pomeroys improve to 14-9 and 9-4 respectively.
Both teams struggled in the early going with no one scoring a point in the first 2:15. SMWC hit a 3-pointer for the 3-0 lead as Smith answered in the next possession with a layup after grabbing an offensive rebound. The Pomeroys increased their lead to 12-4 halfway through the first and ended the first quarter up 22-13.
In the second, the Red Wolves made their first comeback bid. Sally Mortensen hit a triple with 3:38 to go in the half that brought the deficit to just one point at 28-27. The Pomeroys were able to get their lead back up to nine at the break.
Trailing 55-39 after the third quarter, the Red Wolves went on another run and trimmed their deficit again.
Smith’s layup started the scoring in the fourth. Deep in the fourth quarter, McEldowney hit one of her three-pointers with 2:25 remaining to cut the deficit down to five points, the closest the Red Wolves would get.
Kennedy Griffin was also in double figures with 14 points. The Red Wolves shot 39 percent from the floor in the loss.
IU East will host Oakland City on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
