Women's Basketball: IU East 77, SMWC 50

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. - The Indiana University East women’s basketball team bounced back in a big way with a 77–50 victory over Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College on Saturday, Feb. 7.

The Red Wolves, after falling earlier this week at Midway University, came up with a much-needed win to remain in contention for the upcoming River States Conference tournament.

With the win, IU East improves to 11-12 overall and 7-5 in conference play, while SMWC remains winless at 0-23 and 0-12.

The Red Wolves started out fast in the first quarter and used a 12-0 run that separated an early tie at the time to a double-digit lead. IU East continued to build on its lead and took a commanding 40-19 lead heading into the half.

IU East did not let off the gas in the second half and did not allow the Pomeroys to get closer than 15 points for the remainder of the game.

The Red Wolves shot over 40 percent from both the floor and 3-point land. IU East also shared the ball well by assisting on 19 of 26 made field goals.

Three Red Wolves finished the game in double figures and were led by Peyton Wells with a game-high 26 points. Taylor Ferris (16 points) and Maggie Anderson (13 points) also contributed on the offensive side.

The Red Wolves return to Lingle Court on Tuesday, Feb. 10 against Shawnee State University. That will be the first of three straight important conference home games for the Red Wolves.
