FLORENCE, Ind. - The Indiana University East women's golf team is on top of the leaderboard as the Red Wolves look for a second straight title at the River States Conference Championships.
IU East has a team score of 343 after the opening round of the three-day event at the Belterra Resort on Sunday, April 23.
Brescia University is second with a 345 and Midway University is next at 349.
Individually, Liv Sanders leads the entire field with a 78 in the first round.
"I played well for being out for as long as I was out with sickness," Sanders said. "I am proud of the team and know with good mentality we will be just fine the next two days."
The Red Wolves have two other players in the top 10 with Katie Craig in a tie for sixth at 85, while Jalyn Bruns is tied for eighth with an 86. Annie Gillock is tied for 23rd with a 94 and Brooklynn Cromwell is 26th with a 95.
"Liv was excellent today," IU East coach Billy Mullin said. "She did a good job keeping the ball in play and took what the course gave her."
"Jalyn and Katie had real nice opening rounds," Mullin continued. "Katie had a hole out for eagle and a chip in birdie. We are here to play 54 holes, we are going to have to do a better job of keeping the ball in play and gaining shots around the green."
