Women's Golf: IU East at LTU Spring Break Invitational Day 2 Recap
OPELIKA, Ala. - The Indiana University East women's golf team moved up a spot to fourth place after the second round of the Lawrence Technological University Spring Break Invitational on Wednesday, March 11.
After a team score of 349 on the opening day at the Grand National Golf Club Lake Course, the Red Wolves posted a 318 for a total of 667.
"I really liked how our team responded from yesterday's performance," IU East coach Billy Mullin said of the second-best team score of the day. "Shooting 318 on Grand National is playing great golf."
Peityn Gillman led the charge for the Red Wolves with a 74, which was the top score of the second round. She is tied for seventh overall with an 85-74-159 heading into Thursday's final round that starts at 9:15 a.m. (IU East time).
"Today went really well," Gillman said. "My putter was working well today, and I had some approach shots that gave me birdie opportunities."
"I was really impressed with the team's improvement from yesterday to today," Gillman continued. "I'm excited to get back out on the course tomorrow."
Sophia Curry bounced back to climb 13 positions on the leaderboard into a tie for 19th.
"It was a good day on the course, and I was so glad to improve on yesterday's round," Curry said. "My short game really kept me in it today. I can't wait to see what we can do tomorrow."
Curry is now at 92-76-168.
"Sophia and Peityn were both phenomenal today," Mullin said.
IU East's other scores were Jalyn Bruns (85-85-170, 25th), Maddie Campbell (88-83-171, 26th), Lainey Jackson (87-85-172, T27th), Ashlynne Osborne (91-91-182, T33rd), Reagan Brewer (91-97-188, 35th) and Lauren Lacey (102-98-200, T38th).
Loyola University of New Orleans maintained the top spot in the eight-team affair with 309-313-622 as the Wolf Pack are followed by Trevecca Nazarene University (314-325-639) and Lawrence Tech (328-321-649). The Red Wolves passed Midway University (335-335-670) on Wednesday. Catherine Singletary of Loyola leads the field at 76-75-151.
