Bio

Billy Mullin was appointed women's golf head coach at Indiana University East in August 2018.

"I'm excited for this opportunity. Confident and excited," Mullin said. "It was something I've always wanted, to coach at the college level, so when this opportunity presented itself, I jumped on it."

Coach Mullin has been to the NAIA National Championship every year. In 2019, Bre Nowak earned the invite as an individual. After no championship in 2020 because of Covid, Mullin coached Jo Wisecup as an individual in 2021. Wisecup won the RSC Tournament shooting a school record 226 over 54 holes.

Coach Mullin has also been named the RSC Coach of the Year two years in a row (2023, 2024).

The IU East women's golf program has enjoyed the last three seasons. The Red Wolves have captured the River States Conference Tournament Championship three years in a row and earned a berth to the NAIA National Championship as a team (2022, 2023, 2024).

In 2022, the Red Wolves won their first RSC Tournament Championship with a score 992, two shots lower than Midway. In 2023, the Red Wolves shot a 1,017, three shots lower than Midway. And in 2024, IU East carded a 987, eight shots lower than Midway. Senior Brooklynn Cromwell was the medalist in 2024.

Through 2024, IU East has been represented at seven of the past eight national tournaments.

Before coming to IU East, Mullin coached the Hagerstown boys golf program during its dominant run in the late 2010s. The Tigers won four county championships, two conference championships and the 2018 sectional championship - Hagerstown's first boys golf sectional championship in 49 years - under Mullin's guidance. The Tigers qualified for the Indiana regional tournament in each of the past four seasons. Hagerstown was unbeaten in duals in 2017 and 2018.

"One thing no one could question was our preparation, how we prepared for tournaments," Mullin said. "How to build a team environment and how to run a program, I know how to do it.

"Also, under high school rules, I couldn't do things like help players read greens, and now I can do things like that under college rules. That can only enhance what I can do for my players."

Mullin is a lifelong Wayne County resident. He graduated from Richmond High School and earned his bachelor's degree at Indiana University East. He is a financial adviser for Edward Jones.

Mullin comes from a golf-loving family. He describes himself as a "golf purist" who studies players on the practice range at professional tournaments and reads countless books about the sport. He won the 'A' Flight at the Richmond city championship in 2009, has multiple top 10 finishes in the city tournament's championship flight and has played in several state amateur competitions.

"I'm walking into a good situation and hoping to keep the program moving forward and take it to the next level," Mullin said. "There's no doubt I have a lot to learn. This (college golf) is a new level of golf I'm not accustomed to. But I'm also very confident that I will learn very quickly, and we will be very successful in a very prompt manner."

"Billy has built up one of the best high school programs in the area. He has good rapport with his players, and his players have improved under his guidance." - Joe Griffin, IU East Director of Athletics

"I've known Billy since he was born, and Billy has always had a unique passion about anything he does. When it comes to coaching, I saw what Billy did at Hagerstown … He's the type of guy that once he takes on something, he's going to do a good job. You could not have picked someone who will be more passionate and caring. The players will like and respect him, and you can look forward to some real success with him. He will do a great job." - Skip Runnels, 18-time Richmond city champion and one of two Richmond-area members of the Indiana Golf Hall of Fame

"Billy is passionate about working on the fundamentals needed for success. He has the attitude of 'Prepare to be successful.' I'm thrilled to have him at IU East!" - John Gordon, IU East men's golf coach

"Coach Mullin helped to build one of the top boys golf programs in east central Indiana. Winning the sectional for Hagerstown was the first boys golf sectional trophy in almost 50 years. His athletes were always given the best he had to offer, and that never wavered. He is a tremendous, caring person who knows the game better than most. Coach was supportive of all sports programs at Hagerstown and was often seen in the crowd of all our sporting events." - Gerry Keesling, Athletic Director at Northeastern High School and Athletic Director at Hagerstown High School during Mullin's tenure at the school
